About Us

When we started out selling our handcrafted Kombucha in recycled Groslch beer bottles at the local farmer’s market in Ste-Anne de Bellevue, Qc, our environmental impact was already ingrained in our practices. With this conscientious mindset, we set off on a path of doing things different. Today, we are more committed than ever to maintaining the authenticity of our Kombucha production with that same mindset and spirit, while simultaneously taking our vision to a whole other level!

Our Zero Waste Facility

Every single piece of ‘waste’ we produce is sorted into separate categories. This applies to composting practices, proper recycling separation (numbers #1-7), and up-cycling/reusing all materials and by-products possible. And yet, there were still materials that seemingly couldn’t be recycled through any standard local recycling systems. So we searched with dedication, hours on end, contacting organizations in Canada and the United States, until we solved our recycling needs for every last scrap of our waste. That includes the silicone backing of our labels, which are literally used and thrown away by every single company in Canada that uses labels! So when we say ‘zero’ waste, we literally mean ‘ZERO’ waste!! And it feels great!!

Of course, the single most significant environmental contribution we make here at Origin is the reuse of our swing-top bottles. While every other company chooses to ignore where their product containers end up, almost all end up in landfills, like it or not, we have an entirely different philosophy.

We start with bottles made of 100% recycled glass. Our bottles are then sealed with reusable swing-tops and fashioned with reusable waterproof labels. By charging our clients a $1.50 bottle deposit, we encourage them to return their empty bottles to their closest store location, which allows us to reuse them an infinite amount of times. Not only that, we also reuse the delivery box they are delivered in as well. This ensures a closed-loop system that is efficient and waste free! And when the boxes finally give in and can no longer serve for delivery, they become useful for building up garden bed soil and making compressed fire logs.

Our Carbon-Negative Business Model

Although we love being a zero-waste company, we know even that is not enough. So, in addition to being waste-free, we are a ‘carbon negative’ company, offsetting all our GHG emissions each year. This includes, not only the carbon footprint created by our production facility, but also taking responsibility for all of the externalized carbon production of those we partner with in order to create our one-of-a-kind kombucha. Whether it is the farm that grows out tea, the distributor delivering our kombucha, or the ship that brings us our bottles, we painstakingly compute the carbon calculations associated with every aspect of our companies external partnerships, going well beyond typical carbon calculations, to arrive at a truly carbon-negative end result.

Donations & Memberships

Origin loves to give back. We happily donate to several organizations we truly believe in. Not only do we believe in providing our clients with the best tasting and healthiest kombucha possible, we also believe in supporting certain causes and organizations beyond the world of effervescent beverages. To that end, we give a certain percentage of our yearly profit, as well as, 10¢ from each returned bottle we receive, to the wonderful organizations listed below.

10¢ per each bottle you return goes to this organization whose main goal is to conserve canada’s natural environment, preserve wildlife and biodiversity and assist Indigenous communities and nations in achieving their conservation and stewardship goals.

7% of our year-end profit is directed to this social organization which is a national Indigenous youth-led charity empowering youth to shape the future of truth and reconciliation in this country.

We are a member of regeneration Canada, a Quebec based non-profit organization. Their Mission is to ‘promote land management practices that regenerate soil health, in order to mitigate climate change, restore biodiversity, improve water cycles, and support a more productive and just food system’.

We also happily provide our naturally carbonated booch to several events, companies, and groups throughout the year, free of charge.

This past year alone we have provided our kombucha to:

    1. TISS Cabaret Show
    2. Mont-Tremblant’s ‘Chicks on wheels’
    3. PurePrep Vegan Festival After Party
    4. Kickstarter Success Event
    5. Community Art Showcase events in Montreal
    6. La Manufacture Events & Showcases
    7. Youth House of Sainte-Adèle
    8. Cap Emploi

We use local ingredients in our kombucha as much as possible, harvested from wild places, by expert hands, as well as cultivated on local farms.

We pay well above the minimum wage and have included both a gas fund and a work efficiency pay model into our payroll.
For the gas fund, every 3 months we pay each of our employees back the total amount they spend on gas to get to and from work for that entire 3 month period. The work efficiency pay model is set up to reward efficiency. If our team is able to finish their work earlier than 4pm, the official end of day, they are still paid till 4pm. On average, this adds an additional $1-2 dollars to each working hour of the day!! We also provide our employees with a generous year-end bonus for being awesome!!

Origin looks to provide enjoyable work environments for their dedicated team, and a feeling of genuine acknowledgement and financial appreciation for their time and energy which is very important to us all at Origin.

We believe in providing our Kombucha cultures with the organic, high quality and real ingredients they need in order to thrive and create what we consider to be real and artisanal Kombucha packed with enzymes, healthy organic acids and beneficial bacteria and yeasts.
We make sure to make an authentic living Kombucha that we would personally enjoy and benefit from everyday (which we have since 2014).
Our passion lies in staying true to the brew and offering the community a delicious and healthy product that is made with love and care. With distinct brewing processes and traditional fermentation methods, we offer a Kombucha that is low in sugar, unpasteurized, naturally effervescent and full of active cultures that your entire gut, body and mind will benefit from.
